Y111 vs Y12

I had Y 111 DNA done.

I saw in a video where she said that Y 111 can give you back to 5 generations. But if I have a match at Y111, is it possible that our common ancestor is more than 5 generations back ? They could be 20 generations in the past for all I know - right ?

Yes. However a Y37,67 or 111 test are far superior compared to a Y12 test if one is testing for genealogical purposes. If you are interested in only getting an estimated haplogroup then Y12 is fine.

Not sure what that 5 generation thing is that you are talking about. There are matches and there are matches. 111-marker tests show you matches up to a genetic distance of something like 10-11. You probably share a more recent common male ancestor with a match with a genetic distance of 0 than with a match with a genetic distance of 10. Here are the guidelines: https://www.familytreedna.com/learn/...s-interpreted/

111 v 12 - The more markers you test, the more reliable the results are. The fewer false positives and false negatives, and more accuracy about how far back you may be related. It's not about getting more generations back.

Hmmmm!

If I understand [STR Mutation Rates] correctly, the "mutation" rates for Y-111 is ~3.5 generation. So a GD-0 match of 20 generations seems unlikely to me.

FTDNA learning center also say [If two men share a surname,...] the chance is 99% for common ancestor in less than 7 generation.
